Pittsburgh Zombies Reclaim World Record

You can’t keep Pittsburgh zombies down. After temporarily ceding the world record for largest zombie walk to Nottingham, England, the record has been reclaimed by the city that established the initial record in 2006.

The zombie walk held at the Monroeville Mall outside Pittsburgh, PA on October 26, 2008 has been certified by Guinness World Records as the World’s Largest Zombie Walk with 1,341 participants. The walk was organized by The It’s Alive Show, a weekly horror host program originating from Pittsburgh, as part of its World Zombie Day, where more than 50 cities worldwide participated in zombie walks and food drives on the same day, cumulatively raising more than two tons of food donations to benefit their local hunger charities.

World Zombie Day was also honored with a Rondo Hatton Classic Horror Award for Best Fan Event of 2008. The Rondos are awarded for excellence in the horror genre by the Classic Horror Film Board based solely on fan nominations and voting.

Pittsburgh established the inaugural Guinness World Record for largest zombie walk in 2006, when 892 people dressed as zombies invaded the Monroeville Mall, site of the iconic zombie film “Dawn of the Dead”. Since then, the popularity of zombie walks has exploded, many of which feature a charity event.

This year’s World Zombie Day will take place on Sunday, October 11 with the hub once again at the Monroeville Mall. Cities around the world are lining up to participate in this charity event to raise awareness of global hunger. Participants in the zombie walks are asked to bring a non-perishable food item as a donation.

It’s Alive is a television show produced by Clownhouse Productions, LLC in the same format as the highly successful Pittsburgh favorite Chiller Theater. Classic horror movies are presented by a talented cast performing comedy and live music. The show is aired Saturday nights at 10:00 PM on Pittsburgh’s WBGN-TV and midnight on WPMY, and streamed 24/7 via the show’s web site at www.theitsaliveshow.com.

    Flash game developer, Binary Space releases "Zombie Outbreak Simulator" (ZOS), a sandbox application running on Google MapsⓇ. ZOS allows players to unleash waves of zombies on the unsuspecting people of Washington DC. Players can tweak a number of zombie and infection variables such as zombie speed, infection rate, number of civilians and shooting accuracy to create their own version of a zombie outbreak.

    If you think the biggest problem with film festivals today is that there's not enough hot rods, zombies, pin-up usherettes and beer, then the Hot Rod Monsters Film Festival in Seattle is the answer to your Kustom Kulture prayers. The two night festival begins on Saturday July 18th, goes through Sunday July 19th and is described as "a working class film celebration of grease, ink and iron.” It may not be SIFF but it’s definitely fresh and exciting.

  • Horror Realm Presents Charity Art Auction Celebrating Women in Horror Month

    February marks the inaugural Women in Horror Month, and female horror artists and icons will be the theme of the second annual Cara Gasper Memorial Art Auction.

    The event will be held February 27 from 7 PM to 10 PM at Human Production Gallery in Bethel Park, PA. Net proceeds will benefit the Animal Rescue League of Western PA. Admission is free and there will be complimentary refreshments. The event is open to all ages.
